TS Debby Does Damage

by Cliff_Feightner on June 25, 2012

Sorry for the ‘cute’ title but the last 36 hours have been unique in my experience!  Our family  vacationed on the New Jersey barrier island of Long Beach Island when Hurricane Gloria ravaged the east coast. We were 6 feet above the level of the surrounding sea.  The rains that we have just experienced from TS Debby in the last 36 hours, were more intense than were the rains from Gloria!

You will hear many news stories over the next several days.  I can personally account for more than 14 inches of rain.  At one point, my home water surrounded by water on three sides.  I came through it just fine, although that drive home from work last evening was terrifying!  Here are a few photos, taken this morning, after much of the water subsided.  I know that Erik and Teresa will appreciate them!

The pond behind my home is now a lake!  We are still under a tornado watch, as dozens of them have struck our area.

This is a close-up of the edge of my property.  At one point, I had two inches of water in my ‘enclosed’ Lanai.  Rats, I do not want to maintain another pool!  The water sat upon the lot between Annie’s home and mine, next door.  I know this because the topsoil that I was using to repair some of the grass in my lawn, had spread to Annie’s lot, and dried as soil will when suspended in solution.

At no time have I ever seen water ponding in this area!  During the storm last evening, this was covered such that there was no sign of any roads, and the water climbed to within 6 feet of my garage door!

This is one of the millions of tiny frogs that rained from the sky at the beginning of the downpour, 13:00 EDT yesterday.

OK, bring on the next storm; I am ready.

UPDATE: Next storm?  PAH.. We aren’t done with this one.  My lake hasn’t receded an inch, there are trees down all over, one in five roads are closed with water still over-topping them from the couple of inches received today.  There are even a number of roads that are undercut or washed away, and many folks won’t have their power restored until Wednesday or Thursday!  We remain under tornado warnings and the wind is still gusting to 45 mph.

UPDATE #2:  Hundreds of sinkholes have started to open up, capable of swollowing homes whole.  Ain’t life in the tropics grand!

Happy Summer all!  What watering restrictions?
